Getting Married in Puerto Rico

Getting married is said to be one of the most stressful times in your life. Add to that a destination wedding in the Caribbean and the stress levels can be even higher. For anyone planning a wedding here in Puerto Rico; these tips may help smooth the process.
- Request a marriage license form from the Demographic Registry Office (Form RD-12). There is one located in Hato Ray at 171 Quisqueya Street. Tel: 787-767-9120
- You need to have an official blood test (VDRL) (and as of March 12, 2008 Chlamydia and Gonorrhea) that was taken within 14 days of the wedding. Note: it can be done in the States. The test results must be taken to a registered doctor here in Puerto Rico in order to have the medical certification section of the marriage form completed.
- You then have 10 days in which to get married.
- Before the wedding day, you both need to present all the necessary documentation (photo ID or passport (for non US citizens), copy of birth certificate, proof of divorce (if applicable), death certificate (if widowed), marriage license form and blood test results form (RD-12) at the Demographic Registry Office, where you also need to purchase an Internal revenue Stamp ($20).
- A marriage certificate (form RD-75) will then be issued and will be completed by the marriage celebrant, who has 10 days to register the marriage.
- These are just tips and you should verify all requirements by contacting the Puerto Rico Demographic Registry Office.
