New Political Party in Puerto Rico
As of Tuesday April 23, 2007 the people of Puerto Rico now have four political parties to choose from at the next election. The Puerto Ricans for Puerto Rico Party obtained the required signatures of 5% of the eligible voters of Puerto Rico. This is the first time that a new party has qualified in Puerto Rico since 1984.
So now in the 2008 elections the people of Puerto Rico will have to decide between:
New Progressive Party Partido, Nuevo Progresista (PNP) led currently by Pedro Rosselló, who are pro-statehood.
Popular Democratic Party, Partido Popular Democrático (PPD) led by Aníbal Acevedo Vilá who are pro-commonwealth.
Puerto Rican Independence Party, Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño (PIP) led by Rubén Berríos who are pro-independence
Puerto Ricans for Puerto Rico Party, Partido Puertorriqueños por Puerto Rico (PPR) led by Rogelio Figueroa who are pro-citizen participation
