Low Cost Airlines to Puerto Rico are they Cheaper?

Having just done a quick search on the internet for low cost airlines that fly from New York to Puerto Rico, I could only locate 2; JetBlue and Spirit Airlines. Both Jet Blue and Spirit Airlines run a limited service to Puerto Rico with only one or two flights daily. So how do these low cost airlines compare to the more traditional airlines for flights to Puerto Rico. This is just a quick comparison based on the following parameters.

Dates chosen May 4 – 7 (weekend)
Departure Airport: New York (either JFK or LaGuardia) – morning departure going to San Juan. Afternoon departure leaving san Juan (to maximize the time in Puerto Rico)
Arrival Airport: San Juan and Aguadilla (west coast)
Non Stop flights (where possible)

So how did the low cost airlines compare:

JetBlue (JFK to San Juan) – Non Stop
Displayed a price of $283 but tax HAS to be added so it came to $327

Spirit Airlines (LGA to San Juan) – Note this is for 1 stop (have to connect in Miami)
Displayed a price of $293 but with tax final price was $351

Expedia (JFK to San Juan) – Non Stop
American Airlines $392

Expedia (JFK to San Juan) – 1 Stop
US Airways to San Juan. American Airways back to JFK $297

Spirit Airlines (LGA to Aguadilla) – 1 stop (change in Miami)
Displayed $348 but with tax final price was $406

Expedia – No flights found to Aguadilla

So based on this unscientific research it would appear that for the dates and times chosen, the low cost airlines were not the lowest price. The winner is the 1 stop flight from Expedia for $297.

The above results may not reflect the results that you see for the dates and times that you wish to travel to Puerto Rico. Good look in your search for flights.
